Lippische Landesbank was the state credit institution of the Free State of Lippe, one of Germany's smallest constituent states — covering barely 1,200 square kilometers with a population under 200,000. That it was issuing five-million-mark emergency currency in 1923 speaks entirely to the velocity of hyperinflation that summer, when denominations became obsolete within days of printing. The Bega-Werke in Bad Salzuflen was a local industrial printer, not a specialist banknote house, which was typical of Notgeld production when conventional security printers were overwhelmed.
The embossed seal substituted for more sophisticated anti-counterfeiting measures the printer simply couldn't provide.
