| Obverse description | Uniface Notgeld note printed entirely in red on white paper within an ornate Gothic-style letterpress border of interlaced foliate scrollwork. The issuer's name "Landkreis Neuß" appears in a banner at the top, below which the denomination "Fünf Millionen Mark" is set in large Gothic blackletter type preceded by a decorative oversized initial "F"; a small ornamental flourish separates the denomination from the body text. A five-line legal declaration in Fraktur script states the note's acceptance by all public treasuries in the Landkreis Neuss, followed by the date "Neuß, 2. Sept. 1923", a manuscript signature of the Landrat on behalf of the Kreisausschuss, a printed serial number at lower left, and the denomination "Mark 5,000,000 Mark" repeated in the bottom panel. |

Landkreis Neuss was one of hundreds of German district administrations that resorted to emergency currency — Notgeld — during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsbank simply could not produce denominations fast enough to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. By the time a 5,000,000 Mark note was warranted, the mark was losing value within hours of issuance; notes of this denomination were often spent the same day they were distributed.
B. Kühlen was a well-established Mönchengladbach printer with commercial roots, pressed into currency work by necessity rather than specialization. The practical proximity of the print shop to the Kreisverwaltung was more relevant than any security printing capability.
