Henschel & Sohn is best remembered as the locomotive manufacturer whose works straddled Kassel, but this note comes from a different branch entirely — the Henrichshütte steelworks in Hattingen on the Ruhr, which the conglomerate had absorbed and operated as a semi-autonomous division. During the hyperinflation peak of mid-to-late 1923, large industrial employers across the Ruhr were authorized to issue notgeld against anticipated wage obligations, effectively functioning as short-term scrip redeemable at the company cashier.
J. W. Dorn in Elberfeld handled a substantial volume of industrial emergency currency during this period, working under extreme production pressure as denominations climbed weekly. At five million mark, this note was already obsolescent within days of printing.
