Opmerkingen

Francke Werke was a Bremen-based engineering and machinery manufacturer that, like hundreds of German industrial firms in the summer and autumn of 1923, obtained emergency authorization to issue its own notgeld when Reichsbank currency became functionally worthless faster than it could be printed. These factory-issued notes — Betriebsnotgeld — were typically redeemable only at the issuing company's own cashier window, which made them instruments of wage payment rather than general-circulation money.

The Bremer Druckerei A.G. handled a substantial volume of local notgeld contracts during this period. Whether that printing relationship guaranteed timely delivery during a crisis when paper and ink supplies were themselves destabilized is another matter.
