Opmerkingen

Landau in der Pfalz was under French military occupation when this note was issued — the entire Palatinate had been administered by French forces since 1919, and the region's communication and supply lines with the rest of Germany were deliberately disrupted. Municipal authorities across occupied towns were forced to issue their own emergency currency to keep local economies functional, since Reichsbank notes were increasingly scarce and their face values were obsolete almost the moment they arrived.

Five million marks sounds extraordinary, but by mid-1923 it was a tram fare. This denomination became routine within weeks of printing.
