背面描述 Printed in grey-brown on plain paper, the reverse carries a large central diamond-shaped vignette enclosing a detailed line-engraved view of the Duisburg Stadttheater (municipal theatre), a neoclassical building with a colonnaded portico, flanked by lamp posts and trees; the caption 'STADTTHEATER' appears below the building within the diamond. The four corners of the note are each filled with the denomination '5 MILLIONEN MARK' in bold gothic lettering, with the numeral '5' at the outer edges, while the Duisburg industrial and civic emblems are repeated in small diamond cartouches at the left and right centres. A repeating text underprint of '5·000·000 MARK DUISBURG' covers the entire background, and the legend 'NOTGELD DUISBURG' runs along the top border with 'DUISBURG MARK' along the bottom.

备注

Duisburg's municipal authority, like hundreds of German cities, was forced into emergency currency issuance during the hyperinflation of 1923 — not as a policy choice but out of necessity, as the Reichsbank simply could not print fast enough to meet the demand for transactional money. This Fünf Millionen Mark note belongs to that frantic middle period before the zeroes became truly absurd; by late 1923, Duisburg would be issuing denominations in the billions.

The official stamp substitutes for conventional intaglio security — fast, cheap, locally applied, and wholly inadequate against counterfeiting, though at these inflation rates forgery was barely worth the effort.
