| Obverse description | Olive-green letterpress emergency note (Aushilfsschein) with a dense guilloche border framing the entire face. Ornate cartouches at left and right each carry the numeral '5000000' in white relief against a foliate rosette underprint, while the denomination 'Fünf Millionen Mark' is set in bold Gothic blackletter across the centre. Hamburg's Finanzdeputation issued this note during the hyperinflationary collapse of 1923, when municipal and regional authorities across Germany were compelled to print their own emergency currency — Notgeld — because the Reichsbank simply could not produce legal tender fast enough to keep pace with depreciation. By mid-1923, five million marks was roughly the price of a streetcar ticket, and that figure itself would be obsolete within weeks.
H. O. Persiehl was a Hamburg-based commercial printer, not a security press, which is consistent with the speed-over-security approach that characterised much of this emergency production. The DeNG 7/8 reference places it within the documented Hamburg series, but survival rates for high-denomination 1923 Notgeld vary considerably — most circulated hard and briefly before redemption or abandonment.
