Stollberg's Amtshauptmannschaft — a mid-level Saxon administrative district rather than a municipal government — issued this 5-million-mark note in 1923 at the absolute peak of Weimar hyperinflation, when the Reichsbank could not produce currency fast enough to keep pace with price collapse. Districts, municipalities, and private firms across Germany were legally authorized to issue Notgeld to fill the vacuum, and the Bezirksverband stepped in accordingly.
Printed by the Rats-Druckerei in nearby Glauchau, this is a purely functional emergency instrument — regional, unambitious, and disposable by design. By the time it reached circulation, its purchasing power was already eroding by the hour.
