The Amtshauptmannschaft Dresden-Altstadt was one of hundreds of German district administrations that resorted to emergency currency — Notgeld — during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsbank simply could not print fast enough to meet demand. By the time five-million-mark denominations were necessary, the purchasing power of such a note was already evaporating within hours of issue. Local printers like Johannes Pässler in Dresden-Neustadt became de facto monetary infrastructure, turning over new denominations almost weekly.
The short lifespan of these notes in active use means heavily circulated survivors are rarer than uncirculated ones — most were rendered worthless before they wore out.
