Obverse description The left panel carries a vignette portrait of Low German poet Klaus Groth within an ornate blue foliate border interspersed with floral motifs, with a red serial number above and an anchor device below. The central field, printed in blue and gold on a cream ground with fine vertical line underprint, bears the denomination in large Gothic blackletter script reading 'Fünf Millionen' over the numeral '5,000,000' and 'Mark', with the place and date 'Kiel, den 1. September 1923' in cursive below. Four manuscript signatures appear at the foot beneath the respective office titles, with decorative star and eagle devices flanking the composition.

Reverse description The main field of the reverse repeats the denomination in bold blue Gothic blackletter script — 'Fünf Millionen' above '5,000,000' and 'Mark' — set against a cream ground with vertical line underprint, flanked at left by a blue anchor device and star ornaments. The right panel presents a blue cartouche bearing the elaborately rendered coat of arms of the City of Kiel in blue and gold, surmounted by the inscription 'Stadt Kiel', with the printer's imprint 'Hartung & Co. Hamburg' at the lower right. A redemption notice in uppercase letterpress runs across the top and bottom margins.
