| Obverse description | Printed in black on a pale green underprint of an all-over foliate pattern with stylised leaves and branches, the note carries the issuer heading 'Stadtgemeinde Lörrach' at top centre in Gothic letterpress. Lörrach sits on the Rhine directly across from Basel, and by August 1923 the city was printing its own emergency currency simply to keep wages moving — the Reichsbank's supply of notes could not keep pace with the inflation rate. The Wiesentäler Handelsdruckerei was a commercial trade printer, not a security press, and the official seal substituted for any serious anti-counterfeiting provision. At five million Mark, this note was already obsolete within weeks of issue; denominations were climbing by orders of magnitude each month.
