Peru's hyperinflation of the late 1980s was catastrophic by any measure — the Inti, introduced in 1985 to replace the Sol at 1,000 to one, itself collapsed so thoroughly that by 1990 a five-million-unit denomination was needed for basic transactions. That same year the Inti was scrapped entirely, replaced by the Nuevo Sol at a rate of one billion Intis to one.
Printing was contracted to Banco de México, an unusual arrangement that reflects how severely the crisis had disrupted Peru's own production capacity. The note circulated for only a matter of months before the currency reform made the entire series obsolete.
