Opmerkingen

Duderstadt was a small Lower Saxon market town with no particular financial standing when it issued this five-billion-mark note in the autumn of 1923 — the height of the Weimar hyperinflation, when municipal authorities across Germany were legally permitted to print their own emergency currency, known as Notgeld, to compensate for the chronic shortage of usable tender. G. Hövener was a local printer, not a specialist banknote firm, and the note shows it.

At the denominational peak of the crisis, five billion marks bought roughly what a few pfennigs had purchased four years earlier.
