Aachen's municipal and district authority issued this five-billion-mark note during the hyperinflation peak of late 1923, when the Reichsbank could not supply emergency currency fast enough and hundreds of German local governments printed their own Notgeld to keep commerce moving. By November 1923, five billion marks would barely cover a loaf of bread — if that.
The Merkelbach reference (1#8687) places this within the documented Aachen series, though survival rates for high-denomination Notgeld from this period vary sharply depending on whether notes were redeemed and pulped during the stabilization that followed introduction of the Rentenmark.
