Obverse description The face is dominated by an ornamental rectangular border of intricate geometric guilloche work, the design mass offset toward the left portion of the note. The right field contains the denomination value set within a bold geometric rhomboid frame. Text blocks carry the full issuing authority legend and date of issue, Berlin, 15 March 1924.

By the time this note was authorized, the hyperinflation it was designed to service had already effectively ended — the Rentenmark stabilization of November 1923 had broken the crisis before these five-trillion-mark notes could do much circulating. Most of the 12,175,000 printed were redeemed almost immediately at the conversion rate of one Rentenmark to one trillion old marks, making genuine circulation examples less common than the print run implies.

The denomination itself — five trillion — remains one of the most extreme face values ever printed by a central bank of a major industrialized nation.
