Langenberg im Rheinland was a small industrial town in the Bergisches Land, and like hundreds of German municipalities in late 1923, it was forced to issue its own emergency currency as the Reichsbank's hyperinflationary spiral made official notes obsolete almost the moment they were printed. Five trillion marks — 5,000,000,000,000 — is the denomination here, and that figure alone locates this note precisely: October or November 1923, the terminal weeks of the inflation before the Rentenmark stabilization of November 15th.
Municipal Notgeld at these denominations was typically lithographed locally on whatever paper stock was available, often on a single press run. Overprinting earlier, lower-denomination plates was common practice at this stage.
