Additional information

Novodels — restrikes produced by the Imperial Mint for collectors, diplomats, and favored courtiers — occupy a peculiar corner of Russian numismatics where the line between coin and artifact blurs entirely. This piece uses the obverse die of the standard 1758 half-rouble, paired to create a denomination that never circulated and was never intended to. The "48 Kopecks" designation itself is a cataloger's convention, not a monetary reality.

Elizabeth's reign saw the mint produce a number of such confections, particularly during the 1840s–1860s restrike campaigns under Nicholas I and Alexander II, when official mint presses were quietly used to satisfy the booming Western European collector market.
