Paraguay's 1973 gold series was issued under the Stroessner dictatorship as part of a broader program to generate hard currency through collector and investor sales abroad — these coins were never intended for domestic circulation. The Teotihuacana subject is conspicuously foreign to Paraguayan heritage; the series pulled pre-Columbian imagery from across the Americas with little regard for geographic connection to Paraguay itself.
