Portuguese Mozambique lacked sufficient coinage throughout the late nineteenth century, and rather than wait for purpose-struck issues from Lisbon, colonial authorities resorted to countermarking existing Indian rupees already circulating in the territory. The crowned "P.M." punch — standing for Portuguese Mozambique — validated these coins for local use at 450 réis, a valuation set to approximate the rupee's current exchange rate against Portuguese currency.
The host coins vary considerably in date and mint origin, which accounts for the ".0x" suffix in the Gomes reference — each subvariety corresponds to a different rupee type beneath the mark.
