Obverse lettering LUDOVICUS I · PORTUG: ET ALGARB: REX · 1882 · / PM
Reverse description The Portuguese royal arms — a quartered shield bearing the five quinas of Portugal and the castle of the Algarves, surmounted by a crown — displayed at centre within a decorative wreath composed of olive and oak branches. The circular legend INDIA PORTUGUEZA arcs around the upper periphery, while the denomination UMA RUPIA is inscribed in the lower portion of the field. A second countermark punch, partially overlapping the coat of arms, is visible in the left-centre field, consistent with the crowned PM countermark applied for Mozambican monetary authorization. The entire design is contained within a beaded border.
