Obverse description Central shield bearing the crowned royal arms of Mary as Queen of Scots, rendered in a bold hammered style. The letter 'I' (for Iacobus, referencing her Stuart lineage) appears to the left of the shield and 'G' to the right, both in the field. The surrounding legend is separated from the central device by a plain inner circle, with the inscription running continuously around the periphery in Gothic-influenced Latin capitals.

Reverse description Central device comprising an elegant crowned royal cypher formed by the interlaced letters 'M' and 'R' (Maria Regina), surmounted by an arched crown of Renaissance form. A cinquefoil or six-petalled rosette ornament is positioned to each side of the monogram in the field. The date 1553 and the surrounding legend appear within a beaded or plain border, with the inscription beginning at the top and running clockwise around the periphery in Latin capitals.
