The central field contains two paragraphs of Gothic blackletter text setting out the gold-backing guarantee and the statutory counterfeiting penalty, followed by a black serial number preceded by a decorative 'No' prefix on a ruled line. |

The Goldpfennig notgeld issued by Kreis Prenzlau in 1923 belongs to a specific and short-lived category of German emergency currency — wertbeständiges Notgeld, or stable-value emergency money — created in response to the complete collapse of the Papiermark during the hyperinflation peak. Rather than denominating in inflated marks, issuers anchored values to gold or commodity equivalents, allowing the notes to hold purchasing power as the currency beneath them disintegrated.
Prenzlau, the administrative seat of the Uckermark district in Brandenburg, was one of hundreds of local Kreisausschüsse scrambling to keep commerce functional through late 1923. The Rentenmark stabilization in November of that year effectively ended the practical need for such instruments almost immediately after many were printed.
