Nördlingen's 42 Goldpfennig note is a product of the 1923 hyperinflation emergency, when German municipalities were forced to issue their own Notgeld simply to keep local commerce functioning. The Goldpfennig denomination is the telling detail here — by mid-1923, the Reichsmark had deteriorated so badly that issuers were anchoring new denominations to gold values rather than paper ones, a practical acknowledgment that the Reichsmark itself could not be trusted as a unit of account.
The choice of 42 as a denomination reflects the fractional arithmetic of gold-based equivalency tables circulating among municipal finance offices at the time, not an arbitrary figure. Printed locally and designed by Röhm, it remained entirely within Nördlingen's own commercial orbit.
