| Obverse description | Central device consisting of a large armillary sphere rendered in bold relief, displaying radiating meridian lines across the upper hemisphere and a prominent equatorial band dividing the globe. The sphere is surmounted by a cross atop a small finial and flanked by additional structural rings of the armillary device, all set within a plain field. The peripheral legend, partially legible on worn examples, reads JOANNES VI D G PORT ET ALG REX, identifying the issuer as King João VI of Portugal and the Algarves. The design is characteristic of the hammered coinage produced at the Goa Mint during the early nineteenth century, with an irregular flan typical of hand-struck provincial issues. |
