Reverse description The reverse displays the denomination in bold characters occupying the central field: the numeral '4' accompanied by an equals sign or fraction bar denoting the half-reis component, above the word REIS in capital letters. The design is stark and utilitarian, reflecting the practical nature of this low-denomination copper issue struck for circulation in Portuguese India. A rudimentary border of short radial lines or denticles surrounds the field on at least part of the periphery, consistent with hammered Goa Mint coinage of the João VI period. The flan is irregular and the strike is typical of provincial hand-hammered production.
