João VI issued this piece as Prince Regent, governing Portugal and its empire from Rio de Janeiro after the royal court fled Lisbon ahead of Napoleon's 1807 invasion. Brazil was elevated to the rank of United Kingdom in 1815, partly to legitimize this arrangement — meaning the Rio mint was, for a brief window, striking coins for what was nominally a co-equal kingdom rather than a colony.
