Portugal's royal family fled Lisbon ahead of Junot's Napoleonic invasion in November 1807, relocating the entire court to Rio de Janeiro — the only instance of a European monarch governing an empire from colonial soil. The Brazilian mints absorbed the resulting administrative chaos, producing 4000 réis pieces across Bahia and Rio under shifting crown punch varieties as engravers worked to reconcile metropolitan standards with colonial die stocks.
