Zambia's pattern coinage from the late 1990s occupies a peculiar corner of numismatics — pieces struck for proposed issues that were either rejected, modified before release, or produced in tiny quantities as proofs of concept for the issuing authority. This piece dates to 1998, the year following Diana's death in Paris, when mints and licensing agents flooded the commemorative market with proposals. Many never cleared approval.
