| Obverse description | Effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing a tiara, after the portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley; the date 2002 is divided by the portrait, with 20 to the left and 02 to the right in large numerals. The Zambian coat of arms is depicted in the lower central field. The legend ZAMBIA appears along the upper border and the denomination 4000 KWACHA runs along the lower border, all within a beaded rim on the oval flan. |

| Additional information |
Zambia's millennium-themed commemorative program was notably prolific in the early 2000s, with the country's mint contractors producing a wide range of issues aimed squarely at the thematic collector market rather than circulation. The 4000 Kwacha denomination was essentially notional — at 2002 exchange rates, it corresponded to roughly one US dollar in face value, making it a collector vehicle in everything but name.
Elizabeth II's effigy appearing on Zambian coinage reflected the country's Commonwealth membership, though Zambia had been a republic since 1964.
