Zambia's commemorative program in the late 1990s and early 2000s became notorious among collectors for its aggressive novelty issues — animals, holograms, shaped coins — produced almost entirely for the international collector market rather than domestic circulation. This DNA piece fits squarely in that category. The Bank of Zambia issued dozens of such coins through foreign minting agents during this period, with actual Zambian monetary policy having little to do with their production.
KM#84 is one of the more frequently encountered Zambian specials from this run, distributed primarily through European coin dealers.
