Issued to commemorate the 1971 coronation of Savang Vatthana, the last king of Laos — a ceremony that took place under the shadow of the ongoing civil war between the Royal Lao Government and the Pathet Lao. The coronation itself had been delayed for nearly two decades after his father Sisavang Vong's death in 1959, a postponement driven by the country's deteriorating political situation. Savang Vatthana abdicated in 1975 when the Pathet Lao abolished the monarchy, and died in a communist re-education camp sometime around 1978 or 1984 — the exact date remains unknown.
