Additional information

Issued to mark fifty years since the end of Japanese colonial rule, which the DPRK dates from August 15, 1945 — the same date celebrated in South Korea as Gwangbokjeol. North Korean commemorative gold of this period was produced almost exclusively for export, sold through foreign dealers and state trading companies to generate hard currency. Domestic circulation was never the point.

KM#96 is one of several 1995 issues tied to the Liberation anniversary, each targeting the collector market in Japan and Western Europe.
