| Additional information |
Oswaldo Cruz dismantled Rio de Janeiro's yellow fever epidemic through aggressive mosquito eradication campaigns between 1903 and 1906, dropping mortality rates so dramatically that the city transformed from a quarantine zone into a viable port for international shipping. His methods — including forced vaccination during the 1904 Revolta da Vacina — were deeply controversial and sparked a genuine urban insurrection.
The coin was issued during Getúlio Vargas's Estado Novo buildup, part of a broader program commemorating Brazilian scientific and cultural figures on circulating coinage.
