| Obverse description | Laureate and draped bust of King João V facing right, rendered in high relief with elaborately styled curling hair and a laurel wreath, occupying the majority of the coin's field. The portrait reflects the Baroque aesthetic characteristic of early 18th-century Portuguese colonial coinage. The mint mark 'M', denoting the Vila Rica Mint, appears below the bust between two pellets. The circumferential Latin legend reads IOANNES.V.D.G.REX.PORT.ET.ALG. .M., identifying the monarch as King of Portugal and the Algarves by the grace of God. |
