| 正面描述 | At centre, the crowned Portuguese royal arms occupy the field: a composite shield bearing the quinas of Portugal — five escutcheons arranged in saltire, each charged with five bezants — quartered with the castles of Castile, the whole surmounted by a royal crown in high relief. The denomination •400• is positioned to the left of the shield and the issue date to the right, both incused within the open field. A beaded inner circle frames the armorial composition, beyond which the Latin legend PETRVS · D · G · P · PORTVGALIÆ · ET · ALG runs continuously along the outer border, identifying the issuer as Peter, by the Grace of God Prince of Portugal and the Algarves. The engraving is executed in the formal milled style characteristic of late seventeenth-century Portuguese coinage. |

Pedro governed as Prince Regent from 1668 following the forced abdication of his brother Afonso VI, who was confined first to the Azores and later to Sintra until his death in 1683 — at which point Pedro finally assumed the throne as king. This coin therefore spans one of the more constitutionally ambiguous periods in Portuguese history: a reigning monarch technically alive but stripped of all power, and a regent issuing coinage in his own name without yet holding the crown.
The Gomes references PR 59 through 62 reflect distinct die varieties across the emission, with minor differences in the rendering of the cross and shield that collectors have documented across surviving specimens.
