| 正面描述 | The obverse features incuse reproductions of both the obverse and reverse of the 1 peseta coin of 2001, representing the final issue denominated in pesetas. The effigy of Juan Carlos I as it appeared on that circulation coin is thus incorporated into the design. The surrounding field bears the legend JUAN CARLOS I REY DE ESPANA along with the commemorative dates 2002 and 2007, marking the fifth anniversary of the euro's introduction. |

Spain's gold bullion coinage under Juan Carlos I occupied an awkward position in the European market — the country had joined the eurozone in 1999, eliminating the peseta, but retained the right to issue collector and bullion pieces denominated in euros. The 400-euro denomination was part of a broader Spanish strategy to compete with established bullion programs like the Krugerrand and Britannia, though it never achieved comparable market penetration.
The .999 fineness places it a step above the more common .900 gold of earlier Spanish coinage.
