The Banco de España never actually issued a 400 Escudos note in 1873. By that point, Spain had already begun transitioning away from the escudo toward the peseta — the peseta was formally established as the national monetary unit in 1868, making a genuine 1873 escudo-denominated issue from the Banco de España an anachronism. This replica likely draws on surviving design elements from the brief escudo period, but its status as a modern reproduction should be understood rather than assumed from condition alone.
