| Opmerkingen |
The Banco de España issued escudo-denominated notes only during the brief window between the monetary reform of 1864 and Spain's adoption of the peseta system in 1868 — so a 400 escudos note sits at the very end of that short-lived denomination series. The designation "replica" here is significant: the FNMT has periodically produced official facsimiles of historic Spanish notes for archival, educational, and commemorative purposes, meaning this was never intended as a circulating instrument.
The original 1868 issue coincided with the Glorious Revolution that overthrew Isabel II in September of that year, a political rupture that accelerated the peseta's introduction under the provisional government.
