Suriname's independence from the Netherlands came on 25 November 1975, making this 2005 issue the thirtieth anniversary commemoration. The timing was politically charged: by 2005, the country was still managing the economic wreckage of the 1990s hyperinflation that had wiped out the value of the Surinamese guilder, prompting a full currency redenomination in 2004 — just one year before this coin was struck — replacing the guilder with the Surinamese dollar at a rate of 1,000 to one.
