Obverse description The obverse features a highly detailed pictorial map of the ancient Silk Road trade route, rendered in relief across the central field. Notable landmarks and regions are labelled, including Venice (Venedik), Istanbul, Ankara, Anatolia, Bukhara, Samarkand, Kashgar, Persia, Ahmedabad, the Taklamakan Desert, the Gobi Desert, Kyrgyzstan, and China, with camels, caravans, historic buildings, and sailing vessels depicted along the route. A decorative scroll in the lower field bears the inscription SILK ROAD, while the upper scroll reads 2000 YILLIK EKSPEDİSYON İPEK YOLU. The date 2008 and denomination 40 YTL appear in the lower exergue. The circumferential legend TÜRKİYE CUMHURİYETİ runs around the outer border, flanked by star ornaments.
