| Obverse description | Struck on a rhombus-shaped (klippe) flan, the obverse displays a crowned coat of arms of Amsterdam at centre, supported on either side by rampant lions, all contained within a beaded circular border. The arms are surmounted by an imperial crown. The date 1578 appears in the lower portion of the field, below the shield. The design is executed in a crude, emergency hammered style consistent with siege coinage of the period. |
