The Bahia mint — Casa da Moeda da Bahia — was established in 1694 specifically to process silver from the Brazilian interior, making it Brazil's first permanent mint and predating the more famous Rio and Vila Rica facilities by decades. This issue falls within the mint's earliest operational years, when output was irregular and dies were cut locally rather than supplied from Lisbon.
The "Narrow Crown" distinction separates early Bahia dies from later variants — a detail traceable to the engraver's hand rather than any policy change in Portugal.
