Additional information

Pedro I declared Brazilian independence in September 1822, and the new imperial mint wasted little time asserting financial autonomy from Lisbon — this copper issue was among the first domestic coinages struck under the new regime. The 40 réis denomination had roots in Portuguese colonial currency, where the vintém (20 réis) was the basic copper unit, making the "2 vinténs" designation a deliberate bridge between colonial familiarity and imperial identity.

The Casa da Moeda do Brasil operated across multiple facilities during this period, with Rio de Janeiro as the primary striking location. Pedro I abdicated in 1831, which brackets this type's entire production window within a single troubled reign.
