| Description de l’avers | Central field displays the large numeral '40' denoting the face value, surrounded by an array of floral and rosette ornaments scattered across the field. A wreath of laurel branches frames the central design on both sides, tied at the base. The peripheral legend, reading PETRUS I D.G. CONST. IMP. ET PERP. BRAS. DEF., encircles the entire design, with the date and mint mark (e.g. 1824·C) positioned along the lower arc between the wreath terminals. The overall design is characteristic of the early imperial Brazilian coinage issued under Emperor Pedro I. |

| Description du revers | Central device comprises the imperial arms of Brazil: a shield charged with an armillary sphere over horizontal stripes, encircled by a ring of stars, and surmounted by the imperial crown rendered in high relief. The shield is flanked on each side by a naturalistic branch — a coffee branch to the left and a tobacco branch to the right — both springing from the base and curving outward symmetrically. The legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES ('In this sign thou shalt conquer') arcs around the upper periphery of the coin, separated from the design by small star stops. |
