Obverse description The central field displays the crowned Portuguese royal coat of arms, featuring the traditional escutcheon with five bezants arranged in a cross (quinas) at center, surrounded by a bordure of seven castles, all set within an ornate baroque cartouche with elaborate scrollwork and floral embellishments at the sides. The royal crown surmounts the shield, topped by a cross. The circular legend MARIA I DEI GRATIA is distributed around the periphery, with MARIA I to the right and DEI GRATIA to the left, in bold raised Roman lettering. The entire design is contained within a finely milled border.
