| Obverse description | Central field displays the large denomination numeral '40' flanked on each side by a small cross ornament, with the date '1820' inscribed below. A royal crown surmounts the numeral at the top of the inner field. The design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, outside of which the circular Latin legend reads 'JOANNES.VI.D.G.PORT.BRAS.ET.ALG.REX', identifying João VI as King of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves by the Grace of God. The coin's outer rim is defined by a fine reeded border. |
