Opmerkingen

Schwäbisch Gmünd had been a center of gold and silver craftsmanship since the medieval period, and by 1923 the employers' association for its precious and base metals industry was printing its own emergency wages. This is Notgeld in the most literal sense — not civic or commemorative scrip, but a payroll instrument issued because Reichsmark inflation had simply outrun the Reichsbank's ability to supply usable denominations. The 40 Pfennig value is itself diagnostic: an odd fraction that only makes sense when you're calculating piece-rate wages for jewelry workers to the nearest tenth-mark.

The official stamp serves as the authentication mechanism — no serial numbering, no complex security printing, just a rubber impression that stood between legal tender substitute and forgery.
