| Beschrijving voorzijde | Left-facing crowned bust of Charles I, depicted with flowing hair and armored drapery at the shoulder, rendered in a bold, slightly crude hammered style characteristic of Scottish issues of the period. The mark of value, rendered as 'XI' (denoting 40 pence in Roman numeral form as one-sixth of a pound Scots), appears to the right of the king's effigy in the field. An inner beaded border separates the bust from the surrounding Latin legend. The portrait conveys a broad, robust treatment of the royal effigy typical of the third coinage, third issue. |
