The mintmaster's initial 'B' appears below the bust truncation. The royal legend encircles the bust in Latin script within the outer border.

Reverse description A crowned thistle, the national emblem of Scotland, occupies the central field with elaborate foliage flanking the stem. The mintmaster's initial 'B' is positioned above the crown. The Latin motto legend is arranged around the central device within the coin's border, the whole design executed in the characteristic style of the Third Coinage.
