Justinian I reorganized Byzantine bronze coinage shortly after his accession in 527, reintroducing large-module folles and their fractions as part of a broader fiscal reform intended to stabilize everyday commerce after decades of degraded small coinage. The Nicomedia mint — operating as NIKO in its officina marks — was one of several provincial mints activated to meet demand the Constantinople workshops alone could not satisfy.
